Chapter 5- How Magnesium Helps with Hypertension

Magnesium may help in reducing high blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension. Many new findings have been reported in around 38 studies in the past 8 years involving magnesium and calcium. Most of these studies report that more magnesium, calcium and potassium in your diet may help in reducing the risk of hypertension.

Magnesium and Hypertension

One out of every four people suffers from hypertension, or high blood pressure. This is very serious and common health concern because uncontrolled hypertension can cause heart disease and increase the risk of stroke. Hypertension is dangerous because it often has no symptoms or warning signs.

If your blood pressure is between 120/78 and 140/80, you are generally diagnosed with pre-hypertension, and any reading above 140/80 is diagnosed as hypertension. The first reading is systolic and this number should be below 120. The second number is diastolic and this number should be below 80. If either of your systolic or diastolic number is higher than typical 120/80, you may get diagnoses of pre-hypertension or hypertension.

Fortunately, over 83 percent of those who have high blood pressure can easily normalize it through some lifestyle modifications. You should also ensure that you are getting sufficient magnesium in your diet.
